I am sure at least some of you have heard about Kenya in the news. The riots over last week's presidential election have gotten pretty bad in Nairobi and some of the other cities. Thankfully, things are quiet around here. We do not expect much disruption in this area--the main problem lies in the bigger cities.
The biggest problem we face right now is the number of people who cannot get to the hospital. A number of the staff went home for Christmas to different areas of Kenya and are now unable to get back because of the fighting. So the doctors and nurses who are here are having to pull overtime to cover for them.
We also have a number of American visitors who are stuck in Nairobi. Six of them flew in Sunday afternoon and are unable to leave the city. We had hoped to fly them from Nairobi out here (driving is far too dangerous right now), but everything in Nairobi is locked down right now. The visitors are all together at a guest house in Nairobi. They came through Samaritan's Purse and SP will take good care of them, wherever they are.
Bob, who is a research med student working at Tenwek this year, is also stuck on his way back from the States. Unfortunately, he is at a different guest house from the rest of the visiting staff, but at least he is more familiar with this country. We are hoping that the flight will be able to take off tomorrow and get them here and out of the city.
We also have an American family here at Tenwek who was suppose to leave Saturday and can't get into the city. If the flight will make it out here, they will take that flight back to the Nairobi airport.
We are safe, but I can't imagine what it must be like for anyone living in Nairobi. So please pray for Kenya. The events and the actions of the politicians over the next few days ill determine the fate of this country for years to come. Please pray for wisdom for the leaders and for the people.
